MALOY, Michael Alton

Maloy2MICHAEL ALTON MALOY

Michael Alton Maloy, age 41, of Silver Spring, Maryland died peacefully late Wednesday 5/7/14 surrounded by family and a close friend.  He died of the same cancer that his father died of 13 years ago.

Mike is survived by his wife of 13 years, Carolina Bocian Maloy, and two daughters, Nora Marina Maloy, age 8 and Patricia Bocian Maloy, age 5 as well as his mother, Nora Maloy of Ann Arbor, Michigan; his brother, Bernard Mark Maloy (Barney), his wife, Jill and their children Margaret Grace Maloy and Elizabeth Payton Maloy also of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Other close relatives include Carolina’s parents, Valdemar and Marilda Bocian of Curitiba, Brazil and Carolina’s sister Lucia Murphy (Sean), Mike’s aunt, Maggie Maloy McCullough (Tom), uncle, John Maloy (Colleen), aunt, Tessie Maloy Steffens (John), uncle, Mark Maloy and the late aunt, Mary Maloy Walker (Rich).   He is also survived by 13 cousins.

Mike was born in South Bend, Indiana on May 23, 1972 to the late Bernard Patrick Maloy and Nora Alton Maloy.  Through his life, he lived and made friends in North Judson, Indiana; Athens, Ohio; Clearwater, Florida; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia and finally the DC metro area.  He attended Western Michigan University before graduating with a degree in American History from Eastern Michigan University.  He was a veteran of the US Marine Corp.

After 15 years in the commercial construction industry, Mike most recently worked as a project manager for HSU Construction in Rockville, Maryland.  Mike took exceptional pride in recent projects managing the replacement of the Pentagon roof, renovation of office space at the Environmental Protection Agency and new construction of the Armed Forces Retirement Home Hall of Honor, a museum dedicated to relaying the story of the soldier’s home built in 1851 to house retired veterans and also used as a summer home to Abraham Lincoln.

Mike and his family were active members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Community in Silver Spring and truly cherished the friendships and bonds formed there.  Mike was Marina’s soccer coach for three years, participated in multiple fund raising activities, helped with lunch and playground duties when he was available, and annually opened his home to host the end of the year picnic for his daughter’s class.

Lifelong friends were made and maintained through Pi Kappa Alpha, Mike’s college fraternity.  He cherished the camaraderie, activities and spirit of the Pikes.  His “brothers” supported Mike and his family throughout his one year illness and the support continues.

Mike carried on a long family tradition of passion for Notre Dame football.  He and his brother, Barney, were active participants in multiple chat boards to share information on ND football recruits, coaching and performance.  Following his dad’s interest, Mike remained a keen student of history throughout his life and continually worked to share this love with his daughters through trips, books and documentaries on the History channel.   Mike was a renowned family griller specializing in the Brazilian churrascaria that Carolina’s family taught him to prepare.

Mike was never dull and often impatient. When he had something that he was curious about or believed in, he was ferocious in his passion to learn all he could.  Mike was a “hot button” topic guy and always prepared to hold his own in political conversations. His grasp of things he cared about was breathtaking.  He applied this sort of laser intensity to everything, although, first and foremost to his love and care for his family.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland at 11:00am Saturday, May 24, 2014 followed by a luncheon.  Contributions to Mike’s daughters’ educational needs can be sent to:  Maloy Children Educational Fund c/o Carolina Maloy, 1112 Tanley Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904 (checks should be made out to Carolina Maloy) or linking to: http://gfwd.at/SR7G8Z.  Or please make a donation to the non-profit of choice in Mike’s memory.
